Who Uses Professional Searchlights?

Security and Surveillance

Security teams use searchlights for perimeter patrols, site checks, and incident response. The SL2000Li's 1,300-metre beam provides coverage across large industrial sites, ports, and compounds.

Search and Rescue

Mountain rescue, coastguard, and emergency response teams rely on high-powered searchlights for locating casualties in low-visibility conditions. IP65-rated searchlights continue to operate in rain, snow, and extreme temperatures.

Police and Emergency Services

Officers and first responders use portable searchlights for scene illumination, vehicle checks, and evidence searches.

Construction and Site Work

Site managers and inspection crews use searchlights for after-dark checks, structural inspections, and safety audits on construction sites and industrial facilities.

Marine and Maritime

Rechargeable searchlights are used on vessels and at docks for navigation assistance, man-overboard situations, and harbour operations. IP65 weatherproofing ensures reliable performance in wet conditions.

Railway and Infrastructure

Track inspection, tunnel surveys, and maintenance work along rail corridors requires portable, high-output lighting that can withstand harsh conditions and extended shifts.

LED Searchlights vs Halogen and HID Searchlights

Traditional halogen and HID (high-intensity discharge) searchlights have largely been replaced by LED technology in professional settings. Here's how they compare across the key specifications that matter for industrial and emergency use.

Feature LED Searchlights Halogen / HID
Runtime per charge 6 to 15+ hours 1 to 3 hours typical
Weight 1–2kg with lithium-ion battery 3–5kg with lead-acid battery
Bulb lifespan 50,000+ hours (no replacement needed) 500–2,000 hours (frequent replacement)
Maintenance Maintenance-free Regular bulb and battery replacement
Heat output Minimal — allows sealed housings High — risk of lens damage and burns
Brightness consistency Constant output throughout battery cycle Dims progressively as battery drains
Durability Solid-state, shock resistant, IP65+ Fragile filament, vulnerable to impact

Choosing the Right Rechargeable Searchlight

If you’re selecting a searchlight from this range, the specifications shown above can help guide your choice:

  • For long-range focused illumination: choose a spot-beam model such as SL850LiS.

  • For wider area coverage: select a flood-beam searchlight like SL2000Li or SL850LiF.

  • For higher output: compare lumen ratings shown for each product.

  • For longer operating time: review the listed runtime options at different output levels.

Searchlight FAQs

Common questions about rechargeable LED searchlights, beam types, and specifications.

What is a search light used for?

A search light is a high-powered portable light designed for long-range or area illumination. Rechargeable LED searchlights are commonly used for inspections, security work, emergency response, site operations, and specialist search tasks. Professional searchlights typically produce 1,000+ lumens with beam distances measured in hundreds of metres.

What's the difference between flood-beam and spot-beam searchlights?

Flood-beam searchlights spread light across a wider area, making them suited for illuminating large work zones or search areas. Spot-beam searchlights focus light into a narrower, longer-range beam for pinpointing targets at distance. In this range, the SL850LiF is a flood-beam model (900m range), while the SL850LiS is a spot-beam model (1,250m range). The SL2000Li produces a flood beam reaching 1,300 metres.

Are rechargeable LED searchlights suitable for professional use?

Yes. The rechargeable LED searchlights in this range are designed for professional and industrial applications. They use lithium-ion batteries, durable high-impact polyurethane housings, and maintenance-free LED technology rated to IP65 weatherproofing. Samalite searchlights carry NATO stock numbers and CAT/PAD procurement codes for government and military purchasing.

How long do rechargeable searchlights last on a charge?

Runtime depends on the selected output level. On high power, the SL2000Li runs for 6+ hours and the SL850 models run for 7+ hours. On low power settings, runtimes extend to 12 hours (SL2000Li) and 15+ hours (SL850LiF and SL850LiS). Charge time is approximately 6 to 6½ hours.

What is the brightest rechargeable searchlight?

The Samalite SL2000Li produces 4,600 lumens on its highest setting with a 1,300-metre beam distance, making it the highest-output rechargeable searchlight in the Samalite range. On medium and low settings, it delivers 3,500 and 2,400 lumens respectively. Both SL850 models produce up to 2,800 lumens.

Are LED searchlights waterproof?

The searchlights in this range are rated IP65, meaning they are fully protected against dust ingress and water jets from any direction. They are also resistant to frost, heat, and fuel exposure, making them suitable for use in rain, snow, and other adverse weather conditions. The high-impact polyurethane body and shatterproof polycarbonate lenses provide additional protection against impact damage.

What searchlights do police and emergency services use?

Police forces and emergency services typically use rechargeable LED searchlights with high lumen output, extended runtime, and IP65 or higher weatherproofing. Samalite searchlights are used by emergency services across the UK and hold NATO stock numbers for approved procurement. The SL2000Li (4,600 lumens, 1,300m range) is commonly used for scene illumination, perimeter checks, and search operations.

How far can a searchlight beam reach?

Beam distance depends on the model and beam type. The SL2000Li flood beam reaches 1,300 metres, and the spot-beam SL850LiS reaches 1,250 metres. The SL850LiF flood beam covers 900 metres. Spot beams concentrate light into a narrower, longer-range column, while flood beams spread light across a wider area at shorter range.

What is the difference between a searchlight and a torch?

A searchlight is designed for long-range, high-output illumination — typically producing 1,000+ lumens with beam distances measured in hundreds of metres. A standard torch is a smaller, lower-powered handheld light for close-range use. Professional searchlights also feature larger batteries for extended runtimes and more durable, weatherproof housings built to withstand industrial conditions.
